How to look after your teeth?

Brushing your teeth everyday isn’t just a way to keep your mouth feeling clean.

It's a new form of well being.

Let's go over the basics together. Ready?

Why do you need to clean your teeth?

Plaque is a film of bacteria that coats your teeth if you don't brush them properly. And because we want to prevent tooth decay and gum diseases, we want to make sure we are properly removing that plaque build-up.

How to brush your teeth?

Let's start by making sure you have all the needed items in hand. Here are our oral care must haves:

Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and mouthwash (if you're feeling like it!).

Don't rush too much, take your time. Experts recommend to take at least 3 minutes.

1. Brush your teeth first, using only your toothbrush and water. This way you're removing some of the plaque and increasing the efficiency of the toothpaste later.

2. Prepare your toothbrush by rinsing it with a little bit of water. Add a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on top.
3. Start brushing at the back bottom row of your teeth, holding the head at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line.
4. Applying light pressure, move methodically, one tooth at a time, buffing each tooth with the rotating vibrating brush head. Always remember to massage, don't scrub your teeth.

5. Switch to the back top row of your teeth and repeat, cleaning and polishing one tooth at a time.
6. Clean your tongue, moving it slowly across your tongue’s surface.

Make sure you're replacing your toothbrush every 3-4 months or after any illness. If your toothbrush has been overused, the bristles can become frayed and brushing loses some of its efficacy.

Caution!

You can overbrush, so make sure you are using a gentle touch when wielding your toothbrush. Overly vigorous brushing can lead to abrasion, gum recession, and sensitivity.

When should I brush my teeth?

One rule of thumb will be the 2x2 rule. Brush your teeth twice a day for 3 minutes.

What about after food? We know it’s tempting, sometimes, to immediately bolt to the restroom to get rid of the remnants of that meal you just ate. Don't get us wrong, it is better than not brushing at all. However, the best thing is to wait for about 15/20 minutes. This allows for the saliva to do its work on food acid before you dive in and clean your teeth.

How should I clean between my teeth?

You can clean between your teeth with the help of dental floss. Cleaning in between your teeth removes plaque and those bits of food.

Don't forget to floss the backs of your last (last no me parece la palabra adecuada) teeth. It is also very important to clean around the edges of any crowns, bridges or implants. You should clean between your teeth at least once a day, preferably before calling it quits and going to bed.

Now, off you go to your new oral care routine!
